Happy Beds is the fastest UK bed and mattress retailer in the UK helped largely due to their consistent and unwavering dedication to customer centric happiness and strong product quality and design. First incorporated in late 2010 they were already fairly late to the whole selling mattresses online business model, however, delivering massive year on year growth through to 2019, and with a massive collection of happy customers and reviews on trustpilot, Happy Beds have made it clear they can be relied upon to offer a good night's sleep without the hassle.

To that end, whether you are looking for a new bed, bedroom set, mattress, divan or headboard, happy bed’s has you covered. With new room sets for kids in partnership with Disney, they also have the entire kids market covered. There is something for everyone at Happy Beds.

What Is Happy Beds Unique Selling Point?

Happy Beds cut out the middleman and become supplier, manufacturer and retailer all rolled into one. That means you are not going to find products from your big brands like Silentnight, Hypnos and Sealy, but what you will find is uniquely crafted British made products carefully crafted from expert craftsmen. By being online-only, their overheads are far lower than other retailers and the basics of commerce show that with less overhead it is easier to turn a profit with low margins ensuring the end consumer wins every time with a product from Happy Beds

Should I Buy From Happy Beds?

Happy Beds have consistently great reviews, they have a secure website and payment gateway, a long established delivery network and production factories that continue to operate safely through pandemics. There is going to be very little to go wrong with any order you place with Happy Beds and you can take solace in the fact that hundreds of thousands have come before you, and all have been satisfied with their experience.

How does the Mattress Perform?

Materials & Construction

The Signature Platinum is constructed with 2000 springs, which contributes to it being an orthopaedic mattress. Each spring is individually wrapped so it can move independently. This allows it to contour to your body shape more effectively than continuous spring products. While it’s never going to mould to your body like memory foam, most people much prefer pocket spring mattresses to single coil, and the high number of springs indicates a level of quality that is surprising for a mattress in this price range (although spring count isn’t everything).

On the outside, the Platinum 2000 has a Belgium Damask cover with hand-stitched borders. These are designed increase the product’s edge support, although the edges don’t appear to be reinforced in any other way. It’s also an organic mattress as the fillings are all natural – namely a mix of wool and silk.

Finally, the mattress is made by hand in the UK. It also conforms to all British Standards for this type of mattress.

Comfort, Support & Firmness

Let’s start with the cushioning. The organic wool and silk, along with the cover, provide a luxurious feel. The natural filling isn’t as thick as I would like though, which leads me to believe it will start to flatten long before the springs themselves begin to wear out. It’s a relatively deep mattress for the price range though, at 25cm, and reviewers mention that it feels comfortable to lie on.

Happy Beds rate the Signature Platinum 2000 as Medium/Firm. This makes it suitable for all sleepers, although it’s probably best for front or back sleeping. The firmness of the mattress also means your whole body is supported without areas sagging. It’s worth noting that several reviewers think the mattress would be better described as firm, although it is likely to soften a little over time.

There are, however, some reports from buyers that the edges feel weak and soft. This is particularly a problem for heavier people, who may feel like they are going to fall off the bed when sleeping near the edge. The reason is that the edges aren’t reinforced, which isn’t a surprise for a mattress in this price range but still something to keep in mind.

Heat Retention

Coiled mattresses usually don’t have the same problem with heat retention as latex and memory foam. The Happy Beds Signature Platinum 2000 also comes with air vents to increase breathability, which is a welcome feature.

There doesn’t appear to be many reports from buyers about overheating. One reviewer mentions that the mattress stays warmer than the one it replaced, although he doesn’t complain of getting too hot. I think it’s safe to say that the heat retention of the product should be acceptable for most people.

Durability

One of the most annoying things about poor-quality mattresses is indentations or changes in hardness over time. Sagging can also restrict where you can sleep and cause you to roll towards the edges.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a recurring problem with the Signature Platinum according to reviewers. There are a number of reports of sagging after around a year, which is worth keeping in mind – especially if you or your partner are heavier than average.

Stitching is another weak point of many mattresses. The cover of the Signature Platinum is hand-stitched and seems to hold up well in the majority of cases, but, again, there are reports of holes appearing after a year. Most reviews don’t mention this, but there are enough for me to be concerned about the long-term durability of the mattress.

Motion Transfer

Pocket sprung mattresses, in general, are much better at insulating you from your partner’s movements during the night. This is because each spring can move independently (in continuous spring mattress each spring is linked, so movements from your partner are transmitted to your site of the bed). If you struggle to get a good night’s sleep because your partner keeps waking you up, then the Signature Platinum could be a good option.

One of the advantages of a pocket sprung mattress is that they are less likely to smell than a memory foam alternative. As there isn’t any foam in the Signature Platinum, you can sleep on it right away without contending with off-gassing.

Value (Price)

Pocket sprung mattresses can cost over £1000 for the most expensive options. Considering the Happy Beds Signature Platinum 2000 is available for considerably less than this, it certainly makes a case for providing value for money. The firmness, comfort and deep construction are also impressive for the price.

My concerns about the durability of the mattress, especially in regards to sagging, reduce the value somewhat. If the mattress is likely to sag after a year and you plan to use it as your main bed (instead of in a guest bedroom), then does it really provide value? Even so, its comfort and firmness at least partially offset these drawbacks.

There are a number of reviews that are less than complementary about the after-sales service provided by Happy Beds. One reviewer writes that he waited months to receive a replacement after reporting a defective mattress. Another adds that the company refused to refund unless he paid for delivery back to the factory and took responsibility for any damage during the journey. These reports make me more than a little nervous about recommending the company, although to be fair there are also many positive reviews about the mattress.

Reviewers also complain about the delivery service, which they claim is slow and unreliable. Without knowing whether the same courier is being used today, however, I don’t think it’s fair to take any points off the mattress for this.

Is the Happy Beds Signature 2000 Platinum Right for You?

The Happy Beds Signature Platinum 2000 is a relatively inexpensive pocket sprung mattress with an impressive specification considering the price. Like many cheaper mattresses, however, it appears to suffer from sagging after around a year or so of use. For this reason, I can’t recommend it as a primary mattress, despite it being a comfortable, firm and supportive product, unless you are willing to take the risk of needing to replace it within 1-2 years.

If, however, you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive and comfortable mattress for a guest bedroom, the Signature Platinum might be an option to consider. Its high spring count and medium/firm firmness provide a quality feel – and the natural filling feels luxurious.
